Your first meeting with me is the most important event! If you’ve never been to see a counsellor or therapist before, it may well mark a major break with your past life. Maybe you’ve finally decided to ‘fess up’ on yourself: you know something’s wrong, and maybe it’s been wrong for a very long time.

However you might feel about coming to see someone like me, you’ll be sure of an empathic and non-judgmental approach.

The first meeting will last anything from 50 minutes to an hour and a quarter. The main purpose of it is for you to

  • begin to tell me your story,
  • get a sense of me

and for me to get a sense of what might be a suitable approach for you.

Brief Therapeutic intervention - 5 sessions

This is frequently the most effective approach I use. It’s the approach I use for traumatic episodes: so, for example, if you are suffering any of the symptoms that might include flashbacks and nightmares.

In this approach I am likely to be using EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy as the treatment. Both are proven techniques for dealing with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and with all kinds of traumatic psychological injury.

The technique involves very little interpretation of your past from me, but it may well allow you to process major episodes in your past life quickly, safely and effectively. Sessions typically last from 1-2 hours. Many clients achieve major breakthroughs using EMDR.
